Homeowners across Florida have had plenty of reasons to keep a close eye on their insurance premiums over the past few years. So, some recent news from the Florida insurance market is encouraging.
Four Florida homeowners insurance companies have received approval to reduce their rates, with decreases ranging from 3.2% to 10.4% for more than 62,000 policies statewide. These reductions will take effect when eligible policies renew.
Even more encouraging, Florida Insurance Commissioner Mike Yaworsky said he expects to see additional rate reductions in the months ahead and into 2027. There are currently other rate decrease requests under review, some of which could result in even larger reductions.
What does this mean for homeowners?
While insurance costs will continue to vary depending on the property, location, coverage and insurance company, the recent changes point to a gradually improving insurance market in Florida.
The state backed Citizens Property Insurance Corporation is also seeing a significant decline in the number of policies it carries. Citizens was created to provide coverage for homeowners who cannot find affordable options in the private market, but as more private insurers return to the Florida market, some homeowners are finding alternatives.
Citizens President Timothy Cerio recently encouraged homeowners who receive a substantial renewal increase to shop around and compare private insurance options.
That is an important reminder for Florida homeowners. If your renewal premium has increased, it may be worth getting a fresh look at your options rather than simply accepting the renewal.
